If you’re scared of something, that probably means you should do it. Here's some words from a caption I wrote for one of my photos posted on Instagram back on February 15, 2018.
What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
For me, it was when I travelled solo to the island of Martinique. I surprise myself with the crazy things I do, always pushing myself to live life more fully.
I had been planning an island trip with a few of my friends, but then schedules clashed and the idea faded. I still wanted to go, but ruled it out pretty quickly because that meant going alone. A second later I stopped myself and asked, “Why? Why wouldn’t I go alone?” I knew it was because I was scared. My doubts had made a decision so quickly without me even realizing it.
As soon as I knew that if I didn’t go, fear would win, I booked my ticket. Something I will never do is let fear lead my life. Whenever I realize I’m scared to do something, I do it, to prove to myself that I’m stronger than my excuses.
Whenever I realize I'm scared to do something, I do it.
Challenging myself works with my impulsive personality. When I’m feeling hyped up I make bold decisions, like renting a cottage with no WiFi in a place where English isn’t spoken. The best part is, when the adventure nears and I don’t want to go anymore because I’m too scared, I can’t back out. I am a woman of my word and would rather do it and have a horrible experience than be a victim to fear.
I hope to inspire others to leave their comfort zone and experience life in a way they never have before. But don’t be fooled, I’m not some amazing brave human who has no fears. I’m terrified by the things I do, but I am stronger than my fears. You have to push past the scary moments to find a sense of awe in yourself and in the world.
