The Most Important Question to Ask When You Make a New Friend

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

When you invite someone new into your life, ask yourself this very important question: Do I want to become more like them?

You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. This is a lesson I learned from one of my mentors, Jim Rohn. Whoever you hang around most you will become more like.

Choose your friends carefully. If you want to have long-lasting self-belief that actually leads to a successful life, you can’t be hanging around losers.

I’m not talking about the stereotypical losers who aren’t popular, I’m talking about the losers who gossip, who take drugs, who complain all the time, who don’t have goals or ambitions, and who suck the positive energy out of any room.

You know exactly the kind of person I’m referring to. Even if they mean well, just know that the more you hang out with them, the more you will become like that person.

Whenever you meet a new friend, ask yourself if you want to become more like them. Of course, no one is perfect, but if you can identify some characteristics you really admire about them, then you’re on the right track.
