How to Find Positive Friends and Mentors

You become who you hang around. If you want to live an awesome life, you better find some awesome people to hang around!

Jim Rohn, a famous American entrepreneur, once said, "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with."

Who you spend time with is so important to your success. You can’t be hanging around losers. I’m not talking about the stereotypical losers who aren’t popular, I’m talking about the losers who gossip, who take drugs, who complain all the time, who don’t have goals or ambitions, and who suck the positive energy out of any room.

You know exactly the kind of person I’m referring to. Even if they mean well, just know that the more you hang out with them, the more you will become like that person.

Join clubs at school and attend community events. Think about where the type of people you want to spend time with would be hanging out. Are they on sports teams? Volunteering? Get involved in things you genuinely like and where there are other young people.

As for mentors, find people who are living the life you want to live and learn from them. Find motivational videos, speakers, and audiobooks to drown out the chaos. You can even send an email to someone in a career that sounds interesting to you and ask them questions!

Try not to let your current environment hold you back— believe a better life for you is possible and do what you can each day to get closer to that reality, even if it only feels like a tiny step. The most important thing to remember is that you have to reach out to people. Be the one to befriend others and ask questions. Others aren't going to do it for you!
